Info a bit shaky on this one. The artist's name is, I think, Ivan Rezberg ...although it could be Iwan or Jwan, or even Twan, depending how you read the penciled notes on the back. His nationality is given as UdSSR, which I take to be the Soviet Union, and the date as "1926j". The bookplate, a wood engraving, is in the collection of Fray Bentos.
A bookplate by the Russian artist M. Pankov, for "Koloshun", 1966. The stamp in the bottom right-hand corner shows the cosmonaut Alexey Leonov. Not sure of the process here. In the collection of Fray Bentos.
The Low Countries seem to be quite a nursery of modern bookplate design. This one is by the Belgian artist Willy Brasspennincx. The initials of the owner, Harlinde Van Meulder, appear in the pendant. Signed by the artist. In the collection of international art collector Fray Bentos.
Bookplate for H. Fogedgaard, by Czech artist Ladislav Rusek, Linocut. From the collection of Fray Bentos.
The French artist Valentin Le Campion was one of the great names of the bookplate's mid-20th century golden age. Obviously, since I could afford it, this is a minor work. The quality of Le Campion's engraving is evident even in this tiny 2½X3¼" image. How did these chaps do it? There are two designs in one here, each presumably representing one of the joint owners of the plate, probably ...though the names are different... a husband and wife. Dutch by the look of it. I love the landscape at the top, with the distant falling rain beautifully represented by a few incised lines.
Bookplate by the Hungarian Artist Ferenc Bordás for Dr Lustig Istvánék. Wood engraving, 1937. In the collection of international art collector F. Bentos.
Many of the Dutch artist Anton Pieck's bookplates were rather alike. He loved to produce these views of old streets and towns, seen through open casements, always with an open book in the foreground. This plate, a wood engraving, was produced for his son, Max.
